2012 Abilene Gathering: June 7-10th!

As many of you have probably heard, Race the Wind of Wichita, KS has gone out of operation. This means, unfortunately, there will be no more Greyhound America in Abilene. Luckily, our friends at Halfway Home Greyhound Adoption of Tulsa, OK have stepped in and planned a similar Abilene Gathering June 7-10 this year!

The event will not be the same as Greyhound America but they have taken many of our favorite aspects and put a new spin on it. We would encourage every one of you to consider attending this year as it will be a fun, fresh look at greyhound adoption with the focus being on how our greyhounds lived before they were our pets. Farm tours, racing demonstrations and a fundraising auction are just a few of the exciting things you have to look forward to.

We, Hounds of the Heartland, will be hosting a breakfast at the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Friday morning, June 8th, so we will need volunteers to help us plan this event and make it fun for everyone attending. We’re thinking door prizes, trivia and delicious breakfast food!

Registration is EXTREMELY LIMITED so please register as early as possible to confirm your spot for this fun-filled weekend! Below is a summary of all the events you have to look forward to and a link to register.

We will once again be reserving a block of rooms at the Diamond Motel so please contact Candee at Candee.Scott@GreyhoundPetsOK.org to reserve your room with the group. You are also, of course, free to make your own reservation at any hotel you prefer.

Halfway Home Greyhound Adoption Abilene Gathering

The area surrounding Abilene, Kansas is known as the Greyhound Capital of the the world. It is the home of the Greyhound Hall of Fame and the National Greyhound Association. It is a wonderful place to learn about the history of the breed and how greyhounds evolved from chasing rabbits through the fields to trying to catch the elusive bunny on an oval track, thrilling thousands of visitors with their beauty and speed.

Join us and learn about your greyhound's life before they became a member of your family. We will vists farms, meet stud dogs, and hold puppies to our hearts' content, as well as learning how they are trained to race. Capping off the weekend, we will have live racing of future professional racers.

The Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation & our friends at Halfway Home Greyhound Adoption (of Tulsa, OK) have teamed up in a hilarious way to raise money and awareness for 2 great causes.

First, you submit a picture of either your Iggy or Greyhound, and that enters them in the "Presidential" race for the following titles:

Hounds of the Heartland would like to thank The PEDIGREE Foundation for recently awarding us with an $891 grant in order to help us continue our mission of placing retired racing greyhounds in loving, forever homes.

The PEDIGREE Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping dogs in need find loving homes by supporting the good work of shelters and dog rescue organizations around the country.

Specifically, this money donated by The PEDIGREE Foundation will be used to purchase foster dog food, crates, heartworm preventative and pay veterinary expenses for all foster greyhounds in our care. We will be able to put these funds to GREYT use and appreciate all the work they put into helping support rescues and adoption programs across the country.

We would also like to especially thank Janet Riggan, one of our dedicated volunteers who applies for grants for us throughout the years and has raised quite a bit of money for Hounds of the Heartland in her time with us. Janet is owned by Tux the Greyhound and has been a valued volunteer for HOH since 2009. Thank you, Janet, for all the help you have given us throughout the years!

Celebrate Smiley's Adoption!

We can now officially announce that SMILEY the Greyhound has been adopted after 2 years with HOH!

The most wonderful greyhound family has brought him into their home and love him to pieces! Join us this Saturday at the Paws Around Town Greyhound Show & Tell to celebrate Smiley's adoption and with special "human treats" donated by Gigi's Cupcakes of OKC.

We hope to see you there sharing in the excitement of Smiley's forever home! He deserves it!

Greyhound Gala 2012: Volunteer Meeting

We are pleased to announce the date of the 2012 Greyhound Gala: March 10, 2012!

We need to begin securing Sponors and Donors for the event so please check back for details about Sponsorships and Donations.

Any volunteer is welcome to join us on a Greyhound Gala committee and we'd love to have you on the Gala team.

There will be an open volunteer meeting on Sunday, January 8th at 3:00pm at Lighthouse Lutheran Church (in the basement) in Edmond. Lighthouse Lutheran is located at 325 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73034.

The meeting will last about 1.5 hours - we will pass out information about the event and what we need in terms of event volunteers, donations and sponsorships.

Last year we raised over $6,000 - more than twice our goal! We hope we can blow last year's results out of the park and help raise funds for what matters most: our foster greyhounds!

We hope to see you at the Volunteer Meeting on January 8th at 3pm!

Spotlight on Steady!

Steady, or "Lonestar Steady," just came in from the track in Orlando. He has a lot to learn about living in a home but is adjusting nicely. He is very hesitant on experiencing new things, but takes guidance from other dogs very well. He will need a buddy to show him the ropes and make him feel more confident. He will also need a friend to keep him company during the day, he doesn’t like to be left alone. Steady is a quick learner, but will require a patience. Once he feels comfortable he loves to play, run, and really loves a good neck scratch. He has not yet been cat tested but will be soon. Steady is the offspring of HOH’s YooHoo Canoe and Ace’s baby brother.

DELUXE hosts HOH as featured Charity!

This Saturday, December 10th Hounds of the Heartland will have a booth at the DELUXE Indie Craft Bazaar at the State Fairgrounds - Centennial Building in downtown OKC {11am-5pm}. While we have secured all our volunteer spots and are at our maxiumum greyhound limit, we'd love for you and your family/friends to stop by to visit our booth and enjoy the event!

DELUXE is free to attend and ALL items are 100% handmade. We will be raffling off some exciting prizes so be sure to stop by to buy some raffle tickets and support our adoption program. You don't have to be present to win the raffle!

Stop by between 11am-2pm to meet Charley and Polly, both adoptable greyhounds, or come by between 2-5pm to meet Frankie, also currently adoptable and ready for your love!

Hobbes, or "VJ Me Can Run," is a sweet boy who is quiet and has great house manners. He's friendly and crates very nicely. Sometimes he will go in there just to get some peace and quiet! He will do best in a home with dogs larger than 20 lbs. and seems to be a good influence on the other bigger dogs in the home. Deluxe is an indie craft fair and community event with free admission in Oklahoma City, where unique artists show and sell their work to enthusiastic shoppers from all over the region. This event also features local nonprofits, art activities for kids, music and entertainment, and more!

We've had a lot of recent adopters ask where they can buy their greyhound a coat for the upcoming cold weather. Since greyhounds have very thin skin they need a jacket or coat for cold weather to keep them warm. It can be difficult to find a coat to fit your sighthound at a regular pet supply store, so we often have to order online from a sighthound-specific company.

If you have any suggestions to add to the list for our recent adopters, please send suggestions to GreyhoundPetsOK@GreyhoundPetsOK.org. We're always willing to pass along greyt suggestions to other greyhound lovers. Thanks in advance for your input!

Halloween Safety Tips

Keep your greyhound's safety in mind this weekend as spooky ghosts and costumed kiddos show up at your door for a treat!

Keep your candy bowl up high and out of reach of your greyhound. Greyhounds can be very interested in the sweet aroma of the candy, especially chocolate. Artificial sweeteners such a Xylitol (commonly found in candy) are also very harmful to your dog. Wrapped candy, if devoured, does not readily dissolve in the stomach and can cause obstruction or irritation to the Greyhound's digestive system. Those greyhounds can easily reach countertops so keep an eye on your candy bowl at all times! If you suspect your Grey has ingested chocolate or any other candy and is in discomfort, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

The constant ringing of the doorbell on Halloween night can be frightening or upsetting. Keep your Greyhound in their safe place, perhaps their crate or in a bedroom that is far away from the front door. If your Greyhound is friendly and not disturbed by the doorbell, remember that a constant opening of the front door is an invitation to go and "say Hello" to the cute little goblins and possibly run out of the yard. Put a baby gate up in your front door area, or even on your porch if possible. This way, you can reach the kiddos to deliver candy and your Greyhound will remain safe.

ENSURE your greyhound is wearing their collar WITH identification tags 100% of the time.

Ghost Runners' 5k event: THIS SUNDAY!

THIS Sunday, October 30th we will once again have a booth at the Second Annual Ghost Runners' 5K hosted by Heartland Weimaraner Rescue!

Stop by this event at Stars and Stripes Park on beautiful Lake Hefner in OKC between Noon- 4:00pm with your greyhound to show off what greyt pets they make! Bring a lawn chair and a blanket for your hound to lay on.

There are 2 shifts available; 12:00 - 2:00 and 2:00 - 4:00 (you are welcome to stay the entire time!) We appreciate all the support from our volunteers & foster families! This event is a regular show & tell where we educate local shoppers about the joys of greyhound adoption. You are welcome to bring your own well-behaved greyhound as proof that greyhounds make greyt pets!

This Saturday will be a special chance to show off your greyhound in their Halloween costume, so feel free to dress them up so they can strut their stuff for the locals! Bring a lawn chair and a blanket or travel bed for your greyhound(s) to lay on.

Life on the Farm: Unwrapped!

Greyhounds begin their life as racing dogs on the farm, where greyhounds of superior lineage are bred with the hopes of producing outstanding offspring. Greyhound litters are usually between 5-10 puppies. The first 5-8 weeks are spent with the mother until they are weaned, and then they are moved to a separate kennel but still close to their mother. Typically the litter remains together for their entire life on the farm, unless one becomes a bully or likewise and in that case they may be moved to a more appropriate grouping of pups.

The pups are handled often and interact with many other dogs and humans on a daily basis. Many think this is the framework to their gentle and well-socialized nature. They are exposed to racing very early in their lives whether it is friendly competition with their littermates or racing around in their large runs, practicing for their glory days to come.

At about 3 months of age, the pups’ ears are tattooed. The left ear tattoo indicates the dogs’ litter number, and all puppies in the litter are marked by the same number in their left ear. The right ear tattoo indicates the birth date. The first number is the month of their birth (i.e., 3 for March or 12 for December) and the second or third digit is the year of their birth within the past decade (i.e., 9 for 2009 ). The letter at the end encodes litter order. It begins with A and the letter indicates the order the pups were tattooed. If the tattoos read Right Ear: 127D and Left Ear: 45264 that would mean the greyhound was born in December of 2007, and all puppies in that litter are tattooed 45264. After tattooing, the entire litter is registered with the NGA and they are on their way to becoming pro-athletes!

At around 5-6 months, the pups are separated into groups and moved into large fenced runs where they will develop and continue to grow, run and play. They are equipped with concrete shelters for shade or when the weather gets cold, and the pups are given kiddie-style pools in the summer for a nice refreshing break from the sun.

Just shy of a year old, the greyhounds are introduced to many different things including proper behavior around humans, walking on lead, wearing the muzzle and recognizing the squawker – which is a predator call they are taught to respond to. At this time they may also be introduced to the Whirly-Gig. The whirly-gig is a long-armed device that rotates and dangles the squawker in front of the pups in a circular motion so they pups become familiar with running around a bend.

After the pups celebrate their first birthday, they are moved to an indoor kennel to simulate life on the track. Each greyhound has their own large kennel with carpeted floors and shredded newspaper for bedding. This is probably where they pick up their professional nesting abilities and cockroach skills! The kennels are stacked two high; females on top, males on bottom. The greyhounds are turned out four to five times per day, giving them a chance to relieve themselves, stretch their legs and interact with their littermates and kennel-mates.

Throughout the next 6 months the dogs will go to “training camp” two times per week to learn how to chase the artificial lure on the track and monitor their progress as racers. The dogs that don’t make the cut or aren’t excelling during their training period are released into adoption where they will begin their journey to their forever home. The rest will continue to train and practice and prepare for their journey to the racetrack as real bonafide athletes!

Greyhounds begin racing at 18 months old and can legally race until they are 5 years old. At that time they will either go to an adoption group or back to the farm where they were raised for breeding or until they are moved to adoption. Many of our adoptable greyhounds have raced in Florida, Texas, Alabama, etc. but after retirement were brought back to their breeding farm to wait until we can take them into a foster home. Thanks to the support from the farms where they were bred, they are given the opportunity for a great life after their racing career has ended.

Who Knew? The History of Greyhounds

The Greyhound is an ancient breed dating back to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. They are the oldest purebred dog still in existence today. Evidence of their origin goes back over 4,000 years. Paintings inside the tombs of the great Pyramids depicted Greyhounds. They were prized pets and hunting companions of many ancient peoples including the Egyptians, Arabs, Greeks, and Romans. The mythical Greek Goddess Diana is usually pictured with a greyhound at her side. In early Arabian culture, the birth of a Greyhound was cause for great celebrations and second only in importance to the birth of a son. They were the only dogs permitted to share an Arab's tent or ride atop his camel. They were also the only dogs mentioned by name in the King James Version of the Bible (Proverbs 30-29-31).

To be presented with a Greyhound was considered the most prized gift one could receive. Persians believed that the Greyhound was permitted in the next world to give information and evidence about mankind. It was the Egyptians who first raced Greyhounds for sport in open fields with a wild hare as quarry and no rules of the game except speed. In the Early Kingdom, Greyhounds were considered to possess divine powers. Greyhounds almost became extinct during the Middle Ages as famine and pestilence spread across the land. Men of the cloth saved them, and nobility claimed them as an exclusive right of theirs.

Greyhounds were bred as coursing dogs, with the ability to track its prey by sight rather then smell, spot a moving object up to half a mile away, sight game over huge expanses of open terrain and to run at great speeds over long distances in pursuit of their prey. Thus, the streamlined bodies and narrow heads to cut the wind, deep chests to allow for enlarged heart and lung capacity, long legs and well-muscled quarters to enable them to cover ground at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. They possess keen intellect and seem intuitively connected to each other and their prey when coursing in an open field. Their sprinting ability enables them to expend an enormous amount of energy in a short period of time. They run at their fastest between 40 and 45 miles per hour. Their ability to blend speed, coordination, and strategy has made them great hunters as well as racers.

Like a forest of trees, Greyhounds are one of earth's valued treasures. Greyhounds probably came to England with the Gaelic peoples and quickly became popular with the nobility of the land. The Royal Houses kept and hunted with Greyhounds. The peasants also recognized the value of these dogs and their ability to catch small game. Many homesteads kept a Greyhound or two.

In 1014, King Canute instituted the Forest Laws, forbidding commoners to hunt with their Greyhounds on Royal Lands. Any peasant caught hunting in the Royal Forests would be fined and his Greyhound seized, lamed, or killed. These laws, in one form or another, remained in effect for hundreds of years, and the constant battles between the nobility and the commoners became known as the Greyhound Wars. This was the time when the white or parti-colored Greyhounds became associated with the nobility, and the solid colored dogs, with the common folk. The darker colored dogs were better camouflaged when they hunted in the forests and fields at dusk or early morning. The prejudice concerning the colors of Greyhounds continued down through the years and was still affecting the Greyhound as a show dog in the United States as late as the 1950's and 60's. The white and parti-colored Greyhounds were the ones who appeared most often in the show ring and did the most winning. Happily, today, this prejudice does not exist and although many owners and breeders prefer one color to another, success in the show ring is no longer controlled by the color of a Greyhound.

Coursing as a sport grew out of the Greyhounds' natural hunting abilities and tremendous speed and agility in the field. In England in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Landed Gentry, being the sporting folk that they were, formed coursing clubs and met on weekends to compete with their Greyhounds. The Waterloo Cup was one such contest, and it grew to become the premier coursing event in the world. At a coursing meet, several dogs are slipped (loosed) at the "Tally Ho!" signal of the Huntmaster and chase a hare until it is either caught or eludes the dogs. Each Greyhound in competition is judged on its speed, agility, ability to follow and turn the hare, and on the kill.

As the British immigrated to America, they brought their Greyhounds with them and found them ideally suited to chase down rabbits that were interfering with their crops. This led to bets and wagers among the farmers as to who had the faster dog. In the early 1900's Oval Track Racing was developed and quickly grew in importance. This new greyhound activity became more popular than coursing, as it was contained within a smaller space, did not involve the killing of live game, and lent itself well as a spectator sport.

In the last ten years there has been a tremendous grass roots movement in this country and abroad to adopt retired racers and place them in loving homes. This movement, accompanied as it has been by extensive media coverage, is placing thousands of Greyhounds into homes each year and adding greatly to the already well-established interest in the breed.

The Greyhound is one of the most aesthetically pleasing members of the dog world. Although he is not fluffy, cute and cuddly, he does seem to appeal to the "artist" in all of us. The Greyhound has appeared quite often in art through the ages, depicted on tomb walls, ancient Greek and Roman pottery and statues, and in practically all tapestries depicting hunting scenes. He was used extensively in advertising and artwork of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Many ads in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's showed models accompanied by Greyhounds. Several different car manufacturers used the Greyhound in their advertising, as their logo, or as a hood ornament. Of course,

America

's best known bus line adopted the Greyhound not only as its logo, but as its name as well.

Our American General Custer was a big Greyhound fancier, President Lincoln had a Greyhound on his family coat-of-arms, John Barrymore, the famous actor, always kept his house full of Greyhounds as pets, and Bo Derek, the actress, has several retired racing Greyhounds, and is a great advocate of Greyhound Adoption programs.

The Greyhound's incredible elegance, grace and beauty attract those with a heightened sense of fashion and design. His power and speed interests those who move in the "fast lane". His muscular build and agility liken him to the athlete. His sporting nature and colorful history endear him to the outdoorsman and members of the "horsey set". His gentleness, devotion and sense of humor garner him a place in the hearts of all those who know and love him.

The Greyhound was long considered dog Dom's "best kept secret". Now that the word is out, more and more people are adopting Greyhounds. Greyhound owners are an intensely loyal and supportive group who love their charges with a passion. There is definitely a great interest in the breed around the globe. After so many years of companionship with mankind, years filled with love, humor and admiration, the Greyhound is finally realizing his due; a soft place on the couch of a family who adores him and a society who appreciates one of the most colorful, most beautiful dogs in existence today.

Hosted by the OVMA (Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association), this program is all about educating the public about responsible pet ownership and the option to adopt rather than buy.

Bring your family to the Oklahoma State Fair on Sunday September 25th, the LAST day of the fair and stop by to see our adoptable greyhounds and how beautiful they are! Tell your friends, family & coworkers and encourage them to stop by and see the retired racers!

Greyhound First Aid Class: Register now!

Have you ever tried to bandage a part of your greyhound’s anatomy and as soon as they move it falls off?

Do you wonder when you need to take your greyhound to the veterinarian?

Would you like some pointers on giving your greyhound a pill?

These and other questions will be answered and explored in a 2 hour First Aid Class presented by Hounds of the Heartland and taught by our very own Candee Scott!

This will be a hands-on class and each participant is encouraged to bring their own cooperative greyhound to use for bandaging practice. The cost of the class includes a first aid booklet, vet wrap and instruction.

Betty, or "Betty Kohana," is a 5 year old petite little cutie who is very sweet natured and loving. Betty gets along very well with other dogs her size and small dogs and cats. She currently lives in a foster home with 2 greyhounds, a cat, a chihuahua and an italian greyhound- they are all her best friends! She also really loves human companionship. She will follow you around until you sit down, then she will find a cozy place to lay and snuggle right in. Betty is very quiet, until you leave the house then you will hear a little "roooOoOoOo" as if she is saying "I miss you! Come back!" but then she quiets down and waits for you to return. She is a great car rider, she lays down and loves to look out the window, wondering where you are taking her, hoping it's somewhere she'll get lots of hugs and kisses. Betty's big brown eyes will win you over in an instant. Stop by our next show & tell to meet this precious girl!

We have started having monthly greyhound gatherings on the 2nd Sunday of each month to allow our greyhounds and their owners to meet in an informal setting and to give the dogs a chance to see their buddies and stretch their legs. No need to RSVP, and no tables, supplies or adoption literature to keep track of. We’ll meet around 6:00PM, but it will be a come-and-go event. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for other dog park visitors to see the greyhounds in a natural environment, and to get acquainted with the breed.

*Please bring your own muzzle if your greyhound gets competitive!

Top 5 Misconceptions about Greyhounds as Pets

Myth #5: Greyhounds are hyperactive.

Greyhounds are extremely laid back dogs and are wonderful pets for those who are not looking for an energetic dog. World's 2nd fastest land mammal, they are commonly mistaken to be overly energetic dogs due to their speed, but the truth is they are gentle and laid back. They may sprint at speeds up to 45mph, but when they aren't having their daily romp in the yard they are typically sleeping. It's been said Greyhounds sleep an average of 18 hours per day.

Myth #4: Greyhounds have joint problems and health issues.

Greyhounds are one of the healthiest breeds of dogs, especially when you consider their size and life-span. Greyhounds typically live between 12-15 years; much longer than other breeds of comparative size. Hip displaysia and other genetic defects are very rare in retired racers. They have been bred as athletes for decades, thus eliminating many common health issues other breeds may have. Providing your greyhound with high quality dog food, monthly heartworm preventative and annual vaccinations/dental examinations will keep your ex-racer healthy and happy!

Myth #3: You need a huge yard to own a Greyhound.

Greyhounds do love to run occasionally, but any normal sized backyard would work just fine. Many of our adopters have smaller-sized yards and their greyhounds do very well; they will typically work with whatever they have. If you have a small yard and feel your greyhound is due for a good run, take him or her to a reputable dog park in your area and see if they enjoy it. Your smaller backyard shouldn't prohibit you from adding a new fast friend to your family! We are also happy to adopt to those living in an apartment, provided they are committed to always taking their greyhound out on multiple walks daily for potty breaks.

Myth #2: Greyhounds are incompatible with small dogs and cats.

Retired Racing Greyhounds are raised and trained to chase the lure on the track. However, in many of them this does not cross over into daily life and we find that a large percentage entering retirement are perfectly compatible with smaller dogs and cats. When we bring a new foster dog into our organization, they have been cat and small dog tested so we are able to place them appropriately. In fact, many of our foster homes have cats or small dogs and have been proven to live in such circumstances. Tell us about your family: we bet we can find the perfect greyhound to fit your environment!

Myth #1: Greyhounds need a lot of exercise.

We hear this statement more than any other. It makes sense that people would think such fast dogs accustomed to the life of an athlete would need an exceptional amount of exercise, but it's just not true. Don't get us wrong; greyhounds love activities with their owners, but you need not visit the dog park every day for a sprint and you certainly don't need to commit to long walks with your greyhound every day. Greyhounds are sprinters by nature so they will have about 90 seconds of energy before they are ready to cool down and take a nap. A quick sprint around the backyard is more than enough for your retired racer. Generally your greyhound will adjust to the lifestyle you are accustomed to living. If you like to go on long walks, you will need to condition them to endure longer distances.

Foster Focus: The Musicks

Meet Kendra & Ross Musick, one of our wonderful greyhound foster families! We had the chance to get some insight on their views on fostering and learn a little more about their family. Thanks to Ross & Kendra for devoting a piece of their lives to fostering greyhounds for Hounds of the Heartland. We hope you have the chance to meet them at an upcoming Show & Tell event!

What do you find interesting about the greyhound breed? What first got Ross and I interested was how amazingly beautiful they were at full speed. Also we really liked their sleek appearance. As we got to know the breed and meet a few dogs we realized how calm and affectionate they were and what great family dogs they make.

Tell us about your greyhound, Dart: Dart is a spoiled boy! We have had him since he was 6 months old and he was never a racer. We love him so much! He has such a sweet personality and is such a people dog. We would take him to the park and he would meet all the people there and only then think about playing with the dogs. He plays fetch and Frisbee with Ross and loves to show off his great catching and jumping abilities. Dart, Ross, and I spent time training for a marathon and our night runs were great with Dart. Greyhounds might be speed dogs but if trained they can be distance runners. He got up to 10 mile runs with us and then got to ride home in the car. I love how he gets so excited about everything and such a sweet heart.

What made you decide to start fostering for Hounds of the Heartland? We decided we would like to give Dart the chance to interact with other dogs on a regular basis and decided that fostering would be a great opportunity for this. Also knowing we are able to give a pup all he/she needs to help them find an amazing forever home. Once we started to meet all the volunteers we realized what a great group of people were heading things up and how big your hearts were for these great dogs.

What is the most rewarding thing you’ve experienced by fostering greyhounds? Seeing these amazing animals find their new families and how well they play and interact together.

If you could offer advice to anyone considering fostering a greyhound, what would it be? I think you know when a dog enters your home if he/she becomes a member of your family. Adopting your foster is never a bad thing, normally a great thing for both you and the greyhounds. But all dogs that come and go from your home take a part of your heart. Remember you give them so much love and nurturing that it will influence them for the rest of their lives.

Suzie, or "My Susan," is a sweet 2 year old brindle girl who is cat safe. Here’s what Suzie’s foster mom has to say about her:

Suzie is a shy 2 year old little lady, whose real name should be sweetie; her eyes say it all! She has a sweet disposition but is initially shy until she gets to know you. Suzie can be quite playful and enjoys playing with other dogs. She is also cat safe. Suzie had never been in a house before so she is still getting used to "house sounds." She does not like to be scolded and a firm "no!" is enough to send her to her bed. She is still learning about potty training and does well in the crate while both of us are at work. She loves her daily walks and has to be reminded no jumping when she is excited. Susie is quite the "gooser" and is very curious about everything. She may have some retriever in her as she likes to carry shoes, socks, bras, panties to her bed but she does not chew them. :^) She has also taught us not to leave the bread on the counter! Suzie loves being loved on and would be a great pet for a great family!

Skeeter, or "Iruska Hiskeeter," is very affectionate and excitable when ready to play. His ears point forward and look like little fortune cookies - too cute! Skeeter loves to romp around with the other dogs and gets along with everyone. He was born with bowed front legs but they don't bother his stride at all and he doesn't seem to mind! Come meet this cutie at our next event!

Would you like to help our greyhounds on their journey to their forever home? Sign up to be a foster parent and make a lifetime of difference for greyhounds!

Fostering could be the most rewarding process you will ever experience. From the moment your new foster arrives, you are able to begin molding them into the perfect pet they were meant to be. You'll be present for all the fun transitions like learning what glass doors, stairs and tile floor are. You can teach them to walk on leash like a lady or gentleman, and take treats gently when they are being rewarded for good behavior.

Retired Racers are generally accustomed to being crated, making housebreaking an easy process. Your foster greyhound will adjust to the schedule your family is used to, it may only take a week or so for them to be in the swing of things and on their way to total adjustment. Imagine witnessing your foster greyhound pick up a squeaky toy for the first time: pure joy!

Many volunteers are afraid it will be too emotionally difficult to let a foster go once they have made a connection. It's true that it's a very emotional time, letting go of your foster but the pride and happiness you feel when they go on to be a member of a loving family is 100 times greater than any sadness you have once they leave. Plus, once they are adopted you get to look forward to your next temporary family member, as they travel on the same journey your previous foster just did. Once your foster greyhound has been adopted, you are welcome to follow up with their adoptive home and maybe you'll get lucky and get dogsitting rights for life! We love to connect our foster homes with adoptive families.

Families who already have one or two (or more) dogs make EXCELLENT foster homes because the foster greyhound learns to follow-the-leader and do as the others do. They also love playmates and naturally get along with other dogs as they have been raised with hundreds of others on the farm and track. You will enjoy the fun of taking your foster greyhound to adoption events, showing them off to the visitors and bragging about all the wonderful things you've taught them and experienced together.

Hounds of the Heartland covers 100% of the expenses you may incur as a foster home. From medical care
and carpet-cleaner to a crate, dog food and everything in between, we make it free for our volunteers to foster as an extra incentive to loan a loving spot in your home and heart for one of our sweet retired racers. Not only do we provide financial support, we also are available to answer any questions you may have and are here to help with any specific needs your foster may have. The Home Visit: Unwrapped!

Sometimes potential adopters might be intimidated when they see term "Home Visit" on our application. The whole purpose of a Home Visit is to allow us to give you tips on how to make your home safer for your new family member. Some might go overboard and just put away everything in the entire home, but that's really not helpful to us because we'd rather see your home as it would be in normal, everyday life so we can realistically help you prepare!

We may ask to complete the home visit during the week before your greyhound comes to live with you. If the timing is right it's possible we'll bring your greyhound with us on the home visit and plan on living him/her with you after we are finished. Either way, we appreciate you being open to suggestions as to how to make your environment safer for your new fast friend. This is also a great time to ask us any questions about life with greyhounds in general.

The best way to think about greyhound-proofing your home is to prepare for a 3 year old child to come live with you. Much like children, greyhounds can reach coffee tables, get their skin cut on sharp corners and escape through missing fence panels and unlocked gates. If you prepare for the home visit by reading the following tips, it will make your home visit go smoothly and quickly, leaving more time for more exciting things... like getting to know your new best friend! These few steps will make a world of a difference for the new greyhound in your life.

Inside the Home

1. Ensure any outside doors can shut and latch securely behind you. Make note of all screen and glass doors so you can introduce them to your greyhound so he/she doesn't think they can walk right through them.

2. Move any potentially poisonous plants or candy dishes out of reach. (Most greyhounds aren't taller than 30 inches)

3. Prepare a cozy, temperate spot for your greyhound's crate (if you will be crating him/her) -avoid putting it near windows or doors if you get extreme sun or chilly breezes near these areas.

4. Rearrange furniture to avoid sharp table corners (coffee tables, end tables) from being present in high-traffic areas. Greyhounds are lazy but if they get a case of the zoomies, you'll be glad you have a safe spot for them to play!

5. If you have children, provide them a toy bin to keep all their small toys picked up. Your greyhound might think they are "their" toys and just as small parts are hazardous to children, they are also hazardous to pets.

6. Provide a few dog beds (one in each main room) for your greyhound to curl up on. Your greyhound will want to be near you, so make sure you have plenty of soft spots for them to lie down!

Outside the Home

1. Make sure all fence panels are secure and all posts are sturdy. 4-foot chain link fences are just fine, don't worry about your greyhound jumping. It is very rare that we have a jumper and if that was the case we would have told you much earlier in the game.

2. Buy padlocks for ALL gates in your backyard. If you don't have locks on your gates, there's no way you can be absolutely certain your gates are closed at all times, unless you go out with your dog every single time. If you have children, this step is twice as important. It's asking a lot for your children to remember to shut the gate behind them every time they have friends over or are playing in the yard. If your neighbors knock a toy into your backyard, they will probably just come retrieve it and may not understand the severity of leaving a gate open. Padlocks are a very inexpensive insurance against your greyhound getting lost, and we insist you get them!

3. If you have a pool: hopefully there is a fence around it where you can prevent your greyhound from entering the area. If not, you will just need to introduce them to the pool, especially when the cover is on, so they understand they can't "walk on water" - greyhounds are notoriously terrible swimmers. We have plenty of adopters who have pools, so as long as you are diligent about introducing them to it, they will be just fine!

4. Fill any holes in the yard and move any sharp objects that may harm your greyhound while they are sprinting around. Greyhounds don't need large yards at all, but they will use every inch of what they do have. If you have landscaping with metal edging, rocks or lawn statues that could be dangerous, move them out of the way. Trust us, you will save yourself a lot of heartache and we're sure they'll look great on the side of the yard, rather than the middle!

Help! My Greyhound is Lost!

In the unforunate instance your greyhound gets lost, timing is everything! Here are some important steps to follow moments after you realize your greyhound is lost. Bookmark this page for future reference!

What to do if your greyhound is lost:

1) Call Hounds of the Heartland immediately at (405) 633-3138 so we can put out an alert & call volunteers in your area. The first 30 minutes after a greyhound gets out is the most crucial time. The most common mistake is to wait until you've exhausted all your options to call us. Once it's dark outside the chances of finding your dog decrease drastically, leaving them alone overnight. Not only will we send out help immediately, we’ll post to our facebook, twitter & yahoo e-mail groups to reach hundreds of OKC metro residents at once.

2) Ask everyone you know to come out to help scour the area by foot and by vehicle.

3) Alert every veterinarian’s office, animal control and police dept. within 3 miles of where he/she was last seen.

4) Notify your neighbors and give them key identifiers (color, name, which direction they were headed)

5) Hang lost dog flyers (Download a sample LOST GREYHOUND template here!) and post at local gas stations and neighborhood bulletin boards. Remember to remove or renew after a few days if they are still lost. Our easy template gives you a guide to important information to include. Don’t forget the picture – it helps!

6) Post to Facebook, Twitter and Craigslist and ask your friends to repost to help spread the word.

7) Run ads in local papers if your dog has been lost for over a day.

Preventive Measures to take BEFORE an unfortunate incident:

1) Purchase two Squawkers (Scotch Predator Valls) (You can purchase them here) - one to keep in your car and one to keep in your garage. In the unfortunate scenario where your greyhound gets loose, the squawker may be the only thing to break your greyhound's interest in something else and send them running back to you. Remember: only use the Squawker for emergencies, it shouldn’t be used as a toy because they may get tired of it.

2) Keep locks on your fence gates at all times. You may be diligent about latching gates behind you but consider your neighbors and maintenance providers who may not be so careful. Imagine a group of neighborhood children knock a beach ball into your backyard and just want to run in to grab it. Without locks, there is nothing preventing them from accidentally leaving the gate open.

3) Ensure your greyhound ALWAYS has identification on their collar. If you don't like leaving a martingale on your greyhound when you're at home, purchase a simple tag collar that stays on at all times, and just slip over a martingale when you're taking them out. It seems that dogs always get out when the owners had just decided to take their collars off for a couple hours, leaving the greyhound unidentified and increasing their chances of ending up at the shelter rather than back safely in your home. Nothing is more frustrating then finding a lost dog and not knowing who he/she belongs to! HOH requires our identification to be on your greyhound at all times (read about our "Home Again" program) and also requires you to keep your own up-to-date ID tags on them as well. Having backup identification is always a good thing!

4) Educate your children, family & friends about greyhound safety and how important it is that all outside doors be shut securely behind them.

5) Protect your greyhound by always walking them on leash. NEVER let them roam free in an unenclosed area! If you think your greyhound is going to overcome their thousand year-old instinct to chase an object in the distance, you are wrong. Remember, Greyhounds are bred & trained to run, and they love to do so as they can see clearly up to a half-mile away!

6) Prepare lost dog flyers for all your dogs before they are actually lost. This may seem premature, but this way you can quickly fill in the location they were last seen at and all the other pertinent info (picture, phone number, identifying information) is already there and all you have to do is print! We need short clips of each of our foster dogs for the HOH YouTube channel so we can post them on our adoption listings, Adopt-a-Pet, Petfinder, Facebook, and Twitter. You may need to travel to show & tell events around the metro, or make arrangements to visit foster homes and take video. The sky's the limit with these videos and you can get as creative as you want.

Elton, or "Sir Elton John," is a HANDSOME 9 year old boy who is looking for someone to love. He is extremely laid back, great on the leash and totally cat & small dog safe.

Elton was a perfect gentleman from the moment he entered his foster home. He gets along with all the other pets in the house (2 greyhounds, chihuahua, italian greyhound and a cat) and will politely go in his crate when it's time. He has been left uncrated for up to 4 hours already and is always in the same place he was left - tuckered out on a nice comfy dog bed. He has wonderful house manners and will tell you when he needs to go outside to potty. At nighttime he likes to sleep on a cozy dog bed.

His favorite things are loving on his humans, napping and nibbling on a treat every now & again. Sometimes he gets a frisky streak and likes to romp in the yard with his ears and tail pointed up, ready to play! He has a soft coat and loves, LOVES to be cuddled and have his head scratched. In fact, he will even talk to you when you're loving on him. Stop by our next show & tell to experience his cute mumbles!

We can't say enough wonderful things about this big sweet boy. He would be safe with a family w/ children or perfect with an older couple. If you already own a younger dog, Elton would make a wonderful distinguished addition to your family. Sir Elton is a ready made pet, just waiting to race into the heart of the perfect family. Like all other rescues, we have a responsibility and have pledged to find the best home for every greyhound that comes through our program. Although it doesn't always work out that way, we work very hard to ensure our adopters are committed, aware and educated about the breed and the type of dog that would work best for their household.

Our application has been especially designed with greyhounds in mind, and while we don't get applications and "deny" them if not perfect - we do use it as a tool to educate our applicants about what dog would work best for them or why they should choose a particular foster dog we have available.

Penny Elms with Examiner.com wrote a great article explaining many of the reasons we ask the questions we do. We encourage you to check it out and pass it along, so others understand that our involvement with adopters is a labor of love and in the best interest of our foster greyhounds.

A little more than two years ago upon the advice of Hounds for the Heartland advocate Charlotte Stover; Eric Stover fostered and then adopted a greyhound named Murphy. Shortly thereafter Eric and Murphy began a routine of joining Austin (my 8 year old son) and me for dinner. Austin fell in love with Murphy and decided that when Murphy was at our house, Murphy was Austin’s dog. Austin has spent the last two years caring for and loving Murphy. He bathes Murphy, has taught him to sit and takes him on regular walks. He even keeps Murphy’s water and food bowl full and ensures the pantry has an endless supply of Murphy treats.

Last year Austin joined the Boy Scouts and has embraced citizenship and serving his community. This year when planning Austin’s 8th birthday, I asked Austin about collecting cash donations for a charity of his choice in lieu of receiving presents at his birthday party. He exhibited the reluctance one would expect from an almost 8 year old regarding the foregoing of birthday presents. Then Eric mentioned how much it would benefit Hounds for the Heartland and the greyhounds they place in forever homes. Eric and Austin discussed the various ways Hounds for the Heartland could put the charitable donation to good use. Austin was pretty much convinced but the real cincher was when Eric told Austin that he would financially match the monies Austin collected. The decision was made! A collection jar was decorated, Invitations were sent and both boys had a great time telling people what they were doing.

One friend of Eric’s expressed disbelief over a young man foregoing presents to raise charitable funds and then when he heard about Eric’s matching statement he said to Eric, “Friend, I’m going to hurt you!” The “friend” donated generously and while Eric was a bit surprised he had to admit the money is going to a good cause and it really didn’t hurt a bit. So there’s our story…. One rescued greyhound that has brought much delight to one big hearted little boy, two old friends embracing a child’s decision, 15 birthday party guests and generous other friends and family members and $934 to Hounds for the Heartland.

Shelby, or "All Bout Adriene," is having a great time learning what it is like to finally live in a home. She has learned that windows are hard and you can’t go through them, that tile is slippery and carpet is fun to play on. She has also learned that there that giant dog beds are great to cockroach on, and that people are so nice and friendly and will pet you as long as you stand still. She also has learned that there is nothing better than going for a walk or for a ride in the car; and a close second would be a big squishy toy to throw around.

Shelby is a sweet little girl who needs a special family to adopt and care for her. She has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Epilepsy which can be controlled by inexpensive daily medication. She has a lot of love to give and will make a wonderful addition to a special family. Please contact us to learn more about Shelby and how you can give her the forever home she deserves.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 10th for The Bella Foundation's annual "Dog Walk in the Park" event! This year's groovy theme is "A Summer of Puppy Love" complete with Oklahoma's "Hippest Dog" Contest! The event is located at Duffner Park (SE corner of Hefner & May Ave. in OKC) from 9:00am - 3:00pm.

HOH will once again have a booth at the event and we invite anyone and everyone to come enjoy this fundraising event for a great cause. A Dog Walk in the Park will have a 1.5 mile dog walk, Food & Beverages, Pet Product Vendors, Microchipping, Vaccinations, Pet contests, Music & much more! Call for Authors: Greyhound Care

This blog was started nearly two years ago as an avenue to share information about Hounds of the Heartland as well as a media to help promote greyhounds as pets. From time to time, the blog is also used to share useful information about caring for greyhounds and other tips & tricks. Sometimes the best resource for information about caring for greyhounds comes from people that do it every day. So, to all those out there reading this: we all interested in hearing interesting or cool things you do for your greyhound to keep them healthy and happy. For example, do you have some great shampoo you use for your greyhound? or toothpaste that really works well? How about a cool dog bed that doesn’t go flat, or a trick you use to keep them safe in the car?

The best way for people to learn is from other people actually doing it, so let’s all share some of our great successes in caring for our greyhounds.

We will be set up on the corner of NW 16th & Blackwelder - grab a leash & lawn chair and lounge with us while we introduce people to the greyhounds! Bring your greyhound(s) or come alone, the Plaza District is very dog friendly and we have such a greyt time showing off our favorite dogs to the crowds!

Finn's Happy Ending

We love to hear happy stories of greyhounds that have been placed in their forever homes. We were given permission to share one adopter's recount of her love of her adopted Greyhound, Finn {Springwater Finn} and of her experience bringing a Greyhound into their home.

I love my dog. My dog is the coolest dog on the face of the earth. He's huge, has a gorgeous shiny black coat, and looks like one of those Romantic Era hunting dog paintings when he runs. Also, with the black fur, skinny limbs, and signature cute "mournful" expression, he looks like Trent Reznor in the 90s. Who is also a greyhound Daddy himself.

He is so well behaved. He's better than both of our other dogs. He housetrained faster than our Havanese, Ted. Even though he doesn't care to have his teeth or ears done, he's still sweet about it. When walking he stays right with whoever walks him. He does bark up a storm when he sees a dog he's not sure about, and it's a true hound bay, but I still love 'im.

He has all these little personality quirks. Like the way he shows affection by gently nomming your finger. Or the deer-like happy dance he does when you give him a bone. Or his morning routine of "hunting the wolf," during which he runs around the yard at close to full speed, grabbing his favorite wolf plushie and tossing and shaking it around.

But most of all, I love how he's bonded with his little brother Ted. They're both the same age but polar opposites in size and shape, and we were a little uneasy at first. But they love each other. They wrestle on the floor at night. They play keep away with the squeaky soccer ball. They band together to defend the house from the evil squirrels that roam the backyard.

And the cutest thing is that when we're out for a walk and the notorious Rudy, a nasty neighborhood ankle biter whose mom lets him run around off leash, gets in Ted's face? Little Teddy retreats under Finn's legs and lets his big bro do the talking. Finn is quite the protecter of his baby bro.

Anyway, just my little gush-fest about my family's most recent member, Finn. And special thanks to Hounds of the Heartland...if you've ever thought about getting a greyhound, contact 'em! Some of the nicest, most dedicated people you'll ever meet, who know their stuff and can help you figure out if going grey is right for you.

Emergency Fostering in Action…

Several weeks ago we received a call from a family that had adopted a greyhound from Hounds of the Heartland a few years ago. Due to their future living environment they would no longer be able to keep their greyhound. It was a very sad and stressful time for this family, and they called to ask our assistance in placing their greyhound in a new home. Since Hounds of the Heartland places all greyhounds into foster homes, we normally carefully plan when we retrieve new dogs from the Farms. So when an emergency arises for us to take a dog that we hadn’t planned for, we scramble around for days trying to figure out where to place a dog. With our new emergency foster program, this request became a very simple exercise. We were able to take the greyhound almost immediately and actually, in the end, we kept the greyhound out of a boarding kennel and got her into her new foster home. This program is a tremendous assistance to our group and to the greyhounds by making their transitions between homes stress free.

It's once again time for LIVE on the Plaza this Friday, June 10th! Stop by the HOH booth for COOKIES and lots of greyhound love!

Attend Live on the Plaza for another FREE showcase of unique local art and music! From 7 – 11 pm on June 10th, Oklahoma City’s Plaza District is hosting its monthly artwalk to exhibit a new collection of local aspiring artists, musicians, and creatives.

We will be set up on the corner of NW 16th & Blackwelder - grab a leash & lawn chair and lounge with us while we introduce people to the greyhounds! Bring your greyhound(s) or come alone, the Plaza District is very dog friendly and we have such a greyt time showing off our favorite dogs to the crowds!

Work on your Irish accent, come out, grab a beer and celebrate! Saints Restaurant & Pub is celebrating their Grand Opening in the Plaza District during LIVE. The menu is comprised of traditional Irish cuisine with a fresh and healthier approach. You will see items such as, Ireland’s baked version of fish and chips, features a corn meal batter, or Baked white fish with roasted fingerling potatoes. Not to mention there fannies are for sale, so you could walk away flaunting a fanny of your very own. Be sure to catch the fashion show at 8pm, and then the fannies will be displayed as art for purchase after the show!

In addition to all the shenanigans, grand opening and family fun, the Plaza District will host the assortment of live music, featured artists, outdoor arts market and more! Spotlight on Magic!

Magic is truly just that. She is quiet but loving. She, as all greyhounds do, sleeps a lot and loves to be with you. Her foster parents took her to a parade downtown and she greeted everyone with a wagging tail. She seems to attract children; they swarmed her and she loved it! Magic is always willing to accept a petting hand or a cuddle or two. She loves to go for rides and plays with the other greyhound she lives with. Magic's foster mom said she is definitely cat and child safe! Magic walks nicely on a leash and will come to you when you call her name. Spotlight on BeBe!

Bebe is a strikingly beautiful 2 year old girl with a wonderful personality. She's quiet, cat-safe and gets along with other animals; big and small.

New situations are stressful to her but she's smart and learns quickly. If she's a little reserved at first be patient and she will soon be "roached" next to you giving you puppydog eyes or upside down with a bone in her mouth flopping around like a puppy!

She has an old injury to her front leg but it doesn't slow her down.

Bebe only needs 3 things to be happy: A safe place to live, a bone to play with and her family to be near. She's a people dog and loves human affection. Oh, and dinner. She LOVES dinner time!

Medical Moment: Flea and Tick Treatments for your greyhound

Greyhounds are especially sensitive to toxic chemicals because of their thin skin, low body fat and fast metabolism. There are certain substances you must watch out for.

If you don’t have a flea or tick problem, don’t use a flea or tick product on a greyhound. Although we had a fairly hard winter and we will most likely have to deal with fleas and ticks this year after all we do live in Oklahoma and our summer heat is a breeding ground for these parasites.

Unnecessary chemicals are no healthier for your dog than they are for you. Be especially careful of flea and tick products. What is fine for another breed may be highly toxic for a Greyhound.

Products that are safe for greyhounds are: Revolution (fleas, ticks and heartworms), Frontline, Frontline Plus and Advantix and Advantix II (fleas and ticks), Advantage and Advantage II (fleas only). These are once a month topicals. Once again if you don’t have a problem i.e. you may have fleas, but not ticks then only use the flea product. My experience has been that although these products are safe for greyhounds sometimes they may have an allergic reaction such an inflammation or irritation (especially the white or light colored greyhounds). If you have a white greyhound you may want to put some fish oil at the application site along with the flea/tick product to soothe your greyhound’s skin or give them an antihistamine.

Flea collars are not recommended for greyhounds. They contain chemicals, which go directly into the greyhound’s bloodstream. They can cause severe illness or possibly death. We suggest you only use topical flea/tick treatments and only when needed. Preventic collars were tick collars that could be used on a greyhound. We believe they are no longer sold or made. A new collar that is greyhound safe is: Tick Arrest made by Francodex.

The only flea and tick shampoos that are safe for greyhounds are those with Pyrethrins as the main ingredient. Pyrethrins are natural organic compounds derived from chrysanthemums.

Never flea dip your greyhound. The chemicals in the dips are too strong, even when they are pyrethrin-based.

Good luck this flea and tick season and keep those hounds safe!

A Second Chance... Twice.

In late July 2007, Hounds of the Heartland received a phone call from Jeanette, a woman who volunteers with the animal shelter in Muskogee Oklahoma. She had rescued 2 severely starved and neglected greyhounds from a local woman. The owner of the greyhounds had locked them in her backyard with no food and very little water for months after her husband had passed away. She finally called the Muskogee shelter to have someone “get these dogs out my yard before they die.” When Jeanette arrived and approached them in the yard, the male stood over the little female with what strength he had left trying to protect her. The greys were so weak and malnourished that she had to carry them one at a time to her car, because they simply could not walk any longer. The pictures Jeanette took of them at that house still fills me anger and breaks my heart 4 years later.

The shelter did not have the funding or means to do anything but put the animals down to end their suffering. Jeanette immediately called HOH and asked if there was any way our group could possibly help and give these two greys another chance at life. I volunteered to go and pick them up from Jeanette in Muskogee that same afternoon. When I meet her and saw the two pitiful creatures in her car I was sickened and appalled at their condition. I laid them each in the back of my suv and had to wipe the filth of my hands from carrying them. The smell coming off of them was so bad I had to roll down the windows in order to breathe. They were covered in infected sores, fleas, ticks, mud, feces, urine, blood and open wounds. I couldn’t believe they were still alive.

I sped all the way to Dr. Chris Rispoli’s clinic in Edmond, terrified that one of them might actually die in my car. I called and gave Dr. Chris as many details as I could while driving so he and his staff could be ready as soon as I arrived. We carried the dogs in, and he immediately put them on IVs and started to tend to the worst of the wounds. They spent the next two weeks at Dr. Chris’s office under constant surveillance, because he was afraid that they could die at anytime if either decided to stop fighting. Dr. Chris and his staff worked a miracle over that two week period. The male had weighed around 45 pounds and the female close to 30 when I brought them in. They had each already started gaining weight back and wagging their tails at meal times.

At the end of that two weeks, Tamara and I took them home to continue working towards their recovery. The male, who we named Remus, seemed to be the more emaciated of the two; however, the little girl, Dora, had severe internal and external infections. We stated by feeding them each around 8 meals a day, about every 2 to 3 hours. Their digestive systems were in such bad shape that they could only handle very small amounts of food at a time. Their meals were a mixture of boiled white rice and a medicated wet food Dr. Chris sent with them, along with a myriad of medicine and antibiotics. After about a week we were able to add regular, high protein, wet puppy food to their diet. The meals slowly became bigger and further apart as they started to put on more and more weight….but the vet bills were mounting!

Although Dr. Chris does wonderful things for our group, he has to pay his bills as well. Tamara and I got the word out on Greytalk.com and other formats about these two, and soon we had enough donations from everywhere to cover the majority of all their bills. We also had gifts, treats, toys, fancy collars, and prayers sent to them from as far away as New York. People across the country were pulling for these two.

Remus slowly started turning into the goofiest, happy snuggle buddy you could ever wish for, while Dora had a wagging tail that could knock you over and a cute habit of always carrying a stuffy with her everywhere. They were turning into wonderful pets bit by bit, one day at time.

After about 4 months, they were ready for adoption, as Remus was up to 85 pounds and Dora 60. My heart sank at the thought of letting either of them leave my home. We dearly wanted them to be adopted out together, but it just didn’t seem like a possibility in the end. So finally, Remus went to a wonderful home in Edmond. We both cried when he left, after pouring so much love and time into him. I was very happy for him, his progress, and his new family, but selfishly heartbroken.

Dora went to a home soon after Remus, and all was sunshine and fairytales for 2 weeks. Then she went crazy, started destroying everything, and turned into an insane beast! She was so destructive that the couple said they could not keep her, and Tamara and I took her back. She was at our home for another two months without any signs of what she had been doing in the previous home. A bit leery and sad, we placed her in another home, and the exact same thing happened once again. After two weeks Dora went crazy and was soon returned. Once she came back home, she was just fine. It was at that point that we realized she WAS home. We changed her name to Luna (after the lunatic she had become), and she never left again.

Fast forward 3 years to New Year’s eve 2010. My beloved greyhound Miss Daiye passed away. I was distraught, as was Luna. She was very depressed, wouldn’t play, and would wonder around the house, going from room to room like she was looking for her friend. At this point I decided that it would best if I didn’t adopt or foster another greyhound for a long time. I still had Ranger and Luna, and I just didn’t feel right about getting another one. I could never replace Daiye, and I did not want to try.

About a month later, when I had finally convinced myself that I should indeed not adopt again, I received a call from Emily Hummel that Remus was being returned to the group. Without hesitation I asked when and where I could pick him up. The next day I loaded him in my car, still a bit shocked that he was there, but with out doubt that I would ever let him go again. The trip home my mind was racing, trying to think about what would happen when Luna and Remus were reunited. I have always been told that dogs live in the “now” and can quickly forget specifics of their past; however, I don’t think some things can ever be truly forgotten. When I took Remus into the backyard to reintroduce him to Luna and Ranger, Luna went nuts! She jumped up and down, whined, ran circles around Remus, and then started licking him and rubbing on his face. He started wagging his tail and hopping up and down and chasing her in return….they remembered!!!

After a long frolic in the yard, we all went inside, and Remus, who was still a bit nervous from the day’s events and getting very tired, walked right back to the bedroom and laid down in the same spot where he had spent the first several months in my house. Luna then did something I have never seen her do before or sense; she went and laid down next to Remus on the same bed, and the two of them went to sleep, together at last.

Remus and Luna are finally home. I can not believe that I was given a second chance to have both of these wonderful greyhounds in my life. Sometimes there really is such a thing as a happy ending.

This is just one of many stories of happy endings that make us sit back and remember how thankful we are for our veterinarian, Dr. Chris Rispoli, our volunteers, and last but not at all least: our foster homes who make these happy endings possible. Sam the Greyhound

**UPDATE!**

Good news! Sam's real name is Scooby and his owners saw our posts and rushed over to pick him up this morning (5/7/11). They lost him a while ago during bad weather and thought he was gone for good. Sam still has a lot of healing to do and he'll be in good hands with his vet closer to home.

Thank you for your support and well wishes! We know Sam/Scooby appreciates all the good thoughts you've been sending his way, and we're glad he's back home and being cared for by his family who loves him. (Sam's owners graciously paid his vet bill here in OKC, so if you donated to his care we'll be contacting you to offer a refund or alternative.)

Sam is a sweet boy that was found in Muskogee, OK on the side of the road. Lucky for him (and us) a guardian angel found him and was able to bring him to safety. He is severely underweight and was covered in fleas and HUGE ticks, among a list of other concerns we will need to address.

Sam is going to need extra veterinary care and will stay at our veterinary clinic for an extended amount of time until he is healthy enough to be neutered and sent to his foster home. Dr. Chris Rispoli and the staff at Gentle Care Animal Hospital are caring for him and hopefully with extraordinary care and TLC he will begin to gain weight and improve every day.

Emergency Foster Homes Needed!

Have you considered fostering a greyhound, but not sure you have the time to commit to fostering on a long term basis? Sign up as an emergency foster home to help us in a pinch!

We need volunteers who would be willing to open their home to a foster dog in an emergency, but wouldn’t need to continue fostering on a regular basis. Occasionally, we will have a situation where we need to place a foster home fast (greyhounds found in shelters, strays, owner-surrenders, etc.) and we may have already filled our empty foster spots with dogs from the farm or track and have no room to move the new dog into foster care.

As the racing industry continues to change and the economic climate leaves some people without employment, we see more greyhounds in shelters across the state and more families are making the difficult decision to return their greyhound to be adopted to a family with a more financially stable environment. We need to continue to be prepared for emergency situations and you can become a part of the solution. We pay for 100% of the costs associated with fostering and will provide all necessary supplies if you take a dog.

Emergency foster homes will have the option to relinquish the foster greyhound as soon as a regular foster spot opens up, or to continue to foster that specific dog until we are able to adopt the dog to a permanent home.

If you have adopted a greyhound from us in the past and are interested in signing up for the emergency foster list, please contact GreyhoundPetsOK@GreyhoundPetsOK.org for more information. If you have not adopted a greyhound in the past, please fill out an application at http://www.greyhoundpetsok.org/Application.aspx so we have all your information on file, just note that you are interested in being on the *emergency* foster home list. All requirements of adoptive families stay the same, including reading one of the books from our required reading lists and keeping your dog in a fenced enclosure or on leash at all times.

Important things to note are other pets in your household and their size, and any children and their age. We do our best to cat/small dog test all new incoming dogs but if we are in a time crunch we will call those without other small pets first, in the interest of safety.

We understand that fostering isn't for everyone, but the rewards far outweigh the effort and becoming an emergency foster home is a great way to pitch in without the long term commitment.

Yogurt: A True Greyhound Treat!

As we all might know, Greyhounds are susceptible to upset tummies due to changes in diet and stress. If you are a first time Greyhound owner, foster parent, or long-term volunteer and seasoned Greyhound owner you are aware of how sensitive a Greyhound's tummy can be. Let's face it, there's always that embarrassing conversation that we've all had regarding the Big D and passing gas and why it can be so bad. An upset in digestion is a sign that your greyhound has been under stress, a change in diet, or is simply having GI distress.

There are a few good home remedies that just might be of interest to anyone who owns a dog. For those who own a greyhound or even volunteer for Hounds of the Heartland, much of this information is found in "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies" by Lee Livingwood.

Great Yogurt & Pumpkin choices

If your Greyhound is experiencing the big D, you can start him/her on a pumpkin diet. Canned pumpkin is full of fiber that will help with mild diarrhea that isn't persistent. Be sure that the canned pumpkin is not sweetened!
For particularly bad gas, yogurt is a wonderful addition to your Greyhound's diet. Just add 2 T. to your Greyhound's kibble once a day. They will think it is a treat!

If your Greyhound is experiencing any kind of distress, always contact your veterinarian immediately. These are just a few of the many tips to help with your Greyhound's upset tummy and not a cure-all. Since our hounds are susceptible to GI distress, it is important for Greyhound owners and foster parents to have the things necessary to make them comfortable and live long, healthy lives.

Help our friends at Edmond Animal Welfare!

Let's team up and help Edmond Animal Welfare! They have entered the ASPCA’s $100,000 challenge and are among 95 shelters vying for a slot in the contest. The Challenge results in more adoptions of shelter pets and provides funding for the shelter to promote adoptions and to make shelter pets ready for adoption (spay/neuter, vaccinations, etc.).

Edmond is the only shelter in Oklahoma that is competing. They’re up against competitors who are aggressive and organized, so Edmond is going to need our help—let’s show the ASPCA what Oklahoma can do for its pets!

The shelters are pared down to 50 through a voting process. Everyone can vote once a day. The most votes win. Once they become one of the fortunate 50, they then vie to become #1 through another voting process. This round of voting will be from April 4-15, with the final 50 contestants selected on April 18.

This would be a huge feather in Oklahoma’s cap and would greatly improve adoptions in Edmond. As one of our metro shelters, it’s critical that Edmond be supported.
