Spotlight on Delta!

Delta, or "PMB Delta," is a 2 year old female greyhound who is very friendly and social. She loves to play with toys and other dogs! She would do great in a home with other dogs. She is workable with cats. You don't want to miss the pictures below of her playing with her foster "brother" in the backyard! (Look for the purple collar.)

Huzzah! The Medieval Fair is back!

HOH will once again be participating in the Norman Medieval Fair this year- but in a different way: Read on!

Held annually since 1976, this event relives the Middle Ages with arts and crafts, food, games, jousting tournaments, human chess games, costume contests, and more.

Entertainment for the whole family includes minstrels, dancing, theater and reenactments, jugglers, magicians, knights jousting on horseback and human chess games. Brightly costumed characters include King Arthur, mermaids, and the fair's king and queen.

ADMISSION IS FREE!

The Medieval Fair of Norman is the state's largest weekend event and the third largest event in Oklahoma, and was selected by Events Media Network as one of the top 100 events in the nation.

Browse through the medieval village of over 200 art and craft booths offering unique and handcrafted wares. Offerings include pottery, wood crafts, stained glass, armor, costumes, fairy wings, jewelry, leather crafts, hair garlands, and much more. Watch master crafters demonstrating their skills!

HOH will not have a manned booth at the Norman Medieval Fair this year, as the scheduling of volunteers has been too difficult for our small volunteer base to handle in the past. Instead, we will have two 2-hour time slots on Sunday, April 3rd for volunteers to parade their greyhounds around, pass out HOH brochures & answer any questions about greyhound adoption.

Sunday, April 3rd
Reaves Park: Norman, OK
1:00 - 3:00pm
3:00 - 5:00pm

Like last year, we do have "Medieval Dress" available and ask that you do dress appropriately per the below requirements:

Tips for Renaissance Attire:
-Renaissance style Tunics
-No bright colors (earth tones only... no purple please!)
-No halloween costumes (natural fibers please)

The Medieval Fair is a fun way to get the greyhounds out in a large crowd to spread the word about what great pets they make. Greyhounds were considered royalty in the Medieval period so this is an appropriate venue for our greyhounds and their loyal followers!

Please contact Amanda Przymus at (405) 701-8940 or aaprzymus@hotmail.com to sign up for a 2 hour shift to help spread the word about greyhound adoption.

Spotlight on Smiley!

Smiley is an 8 year old boy who loves, loves people! He does great on walks and is perfectly behaved on car rides. He adjusts to new situations very well and is a joy to have at our events. He would be great with a family or any single person. He actually smiles, too! Smiley does okay with small dogs but not with cats. We also discovered at our event at the Oklahoma State Fair that Smiley is probably not Llama or Donkey safe! :) He is a cool dude. Come meet Smiley at our next event!

Sit. Stay. Art!

Our own Secretary Emily Williams' artwork will be showcased in Pets & People's annual fundraiser "Sit. Stay. Art!" on March 18th in Downtown OKC from 7-11pm in the Film Exchange Building at 700 1/2 W. Sheridan. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Sit. Stay. Art! partners local artists with shelter pets to raise awareness, adoptions and funding for local humane organizations. If Emily's artwork sells, 1/2 of the proceeds go to Pets & People and 1/2 goes to Hounds of the Heartland!

Below is a picture of Emily's artwork, inspired by her own adopted retired racer Achilles. Achilles also happens to be our March "blog model!"

We hope you will come out to Sit. Stay. Art! on March 18th and support Emily's artwork as well as Hounds of the Heartland and Pets & People! For more information on Sit. Stay. Art! visit http://www.sitstayart.com/

Prez Says- March 2011

The past few weeks have been a blur for all us within HOH; we have all been busy planning for the 2011 Greyhound Gala, and what a huge success it was! I can’t say thank-you enough times to all the sponsors, donors, and volunteers that made the event possible! And an even bigger Thank-You to all the people that came and help raise money for the greyhounds! As you have seen, we raised over $6000; I’m simply speechless over the generosity of everyone!

My personal hope is that everyone had fun, that people got to meet other greyhound owners, and people that are non-greyhound owners learned a little bit about greyhounds as pets. We have come a long way since last year when we hosted the first Gala; which was a small gathering of people and just 5 raffle items. To this being just our second year were we had over 150 people attend, and 100 of items donated to be raffled and auctioned off. And to top off the day, Porsche got adopted during the event by a long-time greyhound owner. Simply an amazing day!

We have already started brainstorming for the 2012 Gala and have plans to make it even bigger and better. So again, Big Huge Thank-You to everyone for such an amazing event!
