Season's Hero
If you are a member of HOH's Yahoo Group or if you follow us on Facebook or Twitter, you probably saw all the commotion in the past few days about one of our greyhounds getting loose in Edmond.
Tuesday evening we got a phone call that Season, one of our foster dogs, had been spooked by a loud noise and accidentally got loose in the neighborhood. Season has been known to get a little startled by loud noises and he started running away from the sound. As soon as we got word, we posted a notice to our Yahoo Group and other Social Media outlets and the help started pouring in. People were reposting the Amber Alert, notifying their friends and family in the area and we had at least 10 Edmond and OKC residents come out and drive around until about 10:30pm. Season's guardians were out much later than that on foot and by vehicle.
Season is a black greyhound, so it was very difficult to see him at night, but we were reassured by knowing he had on that bright orange collar and his HOH tags. (Read about our "Home Again" program and why it is SO important you have current ID tags on your pets!) After a late night of searching, we called it a night until the next morning when we could see better. We got a phone call around 8:00AM from a previous adopter who had received our cry for help the previous night - on her morning commute she had spotted Season in a cow pasture about 1.5 miles from his home! He was inside the gated/barbed wire pasture and she was on the outside, so she pulled over and called him and was holding his collar & leash through the gate until someone could arrive to help free him from the enclosure. He had crossed Highway 74 in Edmond and was headed west into the Deer Creek area.
Between the time we received the phone call and were able to make it to the pasture, Season had been scared by a loud car passing closely to the gate and had broken free from the woman's grip. He was loose in the pasture again. For the next hour, our volunteers and Season's guardian scoured the hilly pasture with only one sighting of Season. Once we alerted everyone of the sighting, the response was unbelievable. We had volunteers from the entire area come circle that location by car and by foot, looking for any additional sightings of Season. One volunteer that went above and beyond was our long time foster parent Pete Balaban. He showed up in his 4x4 Jeep and scoured every inch of ground, through the ravines and mud from the recent snow. He left no accessible land untouched. He even went to every gate into the fenced area and if it was not padlocked he went through the gate, making sure to shut it behind him and leave it just as it was.
After 3 1/2 hours of searching, Pete sent a message telling us after driving in circles and no sightings, he was going home.
We don't know what posessed Pete to make one last entry into the original gated/barbed wire pasture, but something told him to look once more. He drove off-road, opened the gate, shut it behind him and set out for one more excursion into the field. Not only did he make one more drive through the land, he got out on foot and searched every deep ravine that was out of sight by vehicle, and on the last ditch he checked out, there was Season. He was disoriented and still had his orange collar and leash attached. Pete immediately rescued him from the ditch and took him home to safety. This all happened within 10 minutes of his message that he was giving up. Season was safe, and we owe it all to Pete's dedication to helping greyhounds, no matter who they are or if he knows them or not.
Season is now safe at home, warm, fed and watered. He got a nice bath and lots of love and attention. This story is a reminder that we are all here to help with anything that comes up with your greyhound. If he is lost, please call us- we have the most amazing volunteer network who are willing to drop everything to come help out a hound in need. We could not have found Season so quickly without the help of our volunteers who came out to search and all our friends who reposted the information.
If you are not already a member of our Yahoo Group, please join by clicking the purple button on the left column of this blog! You may be the next person who helps reunite a lost greyhound with their family.
Thank you to all our volunteers, friends and local businesses who helped spread the word about Season!

Post-Valentine's Safety

e had a wonderful Valentine's Day! With the day for Cupid having come and gone, if you are like me and have a huge box of chocolates sitting on the counter, there are a few things to remember to keep your greyhounds safe!Chocolate contains an ingredient that is dangerous for our houndies. Theobromine can cause many health problems that can be life threatening if eaten in enough quantity. So, remember for that counter-surfer the wonderful and sweet aroma of those Valentine's chocolates can be a very tempting treat. Place those chocolates in an area that isn't tempting and continue to "treat" your greyhound with the appropriate goodies!
Happy Valentine's Day! (a little late).

Prez Says - February 2011
We are only three weeks away from Hounds of the Heartland’s annual fundraiser, The Greyhound Gala. This event will represent our only major fundraiser of the year. In the past we held annual garage sales in the fall, but due to the extreme workload that type of event places on our volunteers we have made the decision to no longer host the annual Garage Sale. Going forward The Greyhound Gala will be HOH's only major fundraising event. This means we need big things to happen at the Gala, and hopefully all the planning and hard work to host the event will be rewarded with recorded setting donations.
Hounds of the Heartland is operated completely by volunteers, so everything that occurs is solely out of people’s caring nature toward the Greyhounds. This also means that every penny raised goes directly to helping Greyhounds find forever homes. Our expenses for each foster dog include: Veterinary care, food, beds, blankets, crates, coats, medical supplies, heartworm pills, flea/tick treatments, routine nail trimmings, and so forth. Our goal is to keep the adoption fee low so people consider us when searching for a new dog. With our low adoption fee, we actually lose money on each adoption we complete. Therefore, donations are the only way we can continue to operate. I hope everyone can take a couple hours out of their day on March 5th, 2011 to attend the Gala, and I hope everyone will dig deep into their pockets to help these amazing animals find their forever homes.

Spotlight on Hollywood!
Hollywood, or "KL Holly Would," is a small girl with lots of love to give. She is still really shy, but every day she is learning. Hollywood will need lots of patience and love to come out of her shell. She will do better with another dog to "show her the ropes" as she builds her confidence. Hollywood is 3 years old and cat/small dog friendly.

Spotlight on Missy!
Missy, or "KL Braylon," is a sweet fawn greyhound who loves everyone and loves attention! She is great with other dogs large and small, and cats too! Missy is a well behaved girl but still has that adorable puppy personality. She is very sensitive to loud noises and responds well to gentle commands. She is housebroken and sleeps well through the night. She loves to go in her cozy crate and take naps throughout the day, and loves "toy trafficking" - gathering toys and move them from room to room. Missy is Charlie's sister. Stay tuned for more personality information about sweet Missy!

Dry Skin?
Is your greyhound dry and flaky with these crazy low temperatures? I know my black greyhound has a lot of dandruff lately! Here are a few tips that might help:
To help your greyhound's coat during the winter months there are a few things you can do. First, don't forget to continue to brush your greyhound. Their undercoat still needs to be maintained. A wonderful and inexpensive brush to use is the Kong Brush. You can find it at almost all pet stores. Second, you can add a few things to your greyhound's diet that might help to lessen the chances of dandruff. One easy and convenient ingredient to use is olive oil. Just add 1 T. of olive oil to your greyhound's kibble once a day, along with a good brushing every few days, and you might see a difference! Another option is to try coconut oil. Coconut oil has been a huge hit in my home. You can purchase coconut oil in bulk over the internet, or you can find it at almost any health food store or even your local pet boutique. Just add 1 T. of the coconut oil to your greyhound's kibble once a day, or for a special treat you can scoop it into your hand and watch it melt from your body heat while your greyhound eats it up! They think it is a treat!
You may not have to give your greyhound the extra ingredient on a long term basis. Just continue to brush that undercoat out and observe how your greyhound's coat is doing on the olive or coconut oil. Don't forget, you can ask any Hounds of the Heartland volunteer what they do for their greyhound and get supplemental tips. What works for one greyhound may not work for yours.
Everyone stay safe and warm in this crazy Oklahoma weather!
