Long Gone John finds a Home!

Hounds of the Heartland would like to congratulate Michele Parry on her new greyhound companion John!

John is a very happy and outgoing boy. He is taking retirement very seriously and could be our poster boy for the "45 mph Couch Potato." He has adopted his new mom, along with her couch and is loving life. John currently spends his days lounging on his favorite couch and gathering all of his toys to be next to him. He loves to run in Michele's spacious backyard and also loves to go on a walk or a car ride. He is still trying to figure out how to ride in the car but he will get the hang of it. Happy Tails to you John!

I'd say this is another successful adoption! If you or someone you know is interested in greyhound adoption, please visit our website http://www.greyhoundpetsok.org/. You can fill out an application, read about retired racing greyhounds or email one of our board members.

Keep your Greyhound safe this Halloween

This coming Saturday our doorbells will be ringing as miniature ghosts, witches, and pirates ask for candy. Our national holiday, Halloween, can be a fun night for many people but we need to keep our Greyhounds in mind as it could be a potentially frightening or harmful night for them.

Here are a few tips to keep your Greyhound comfortable and safe:
  • Remember to keep your candy bowl up high and out of reach of your greyhound. Greyhounds can be very interested in the sweet aroma of the candy, especially chocolate. Chocolate is very toxic to your grey as it contains a substance called theobromine. This substance can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart disturbances, or even death to the animal.
  • Candy wrappers can also cause problems to your Greyhound. Wrapped candy, if devoured, does not readily dissolve in the stomach and can cause obstruction or irritation to the Greyhound's digestive system.
  • Is your Greyhound easily excitable? The constant ringing of the doorbell on Halloween night can be frightening or upsetting. Keep your Greyhound in their safe place, perhaps their crate or in a bedroom that is far away from the front door. If your Greyhound is friendly and not disturbed by the doorbell, remember that a constant opening of the front door is an invitation to go and "say Hello" to the cute little goblins and possibly run out of the yard. Put a baby gate up in your front door area, or even on your porch if possible. This way, you can reach the kiddos to deliver candy and your Greyhound will remain safe.
Hounds of the Heartland wants you and your Greyhound to have a safe and Happy Halloween! Avoid these hazards by keeping your sweets away and ensuring a relaxed environment. If you suspect your Grey has ingested chocolate or any other candy and is in discomfort, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Spiral Finds Love!

Kingsley (now renamed Spiral) has been officially adopted by Kurt & Megan West!

The West family met Hounds of the Heartland at a LIVE on the Plaza event. By pure coincidence Kurt had been searching for a running partner and a potential sibling to shih-tzu Macho when he saw the HOH booth at LIVE. After reading Retired Racing Greyhounds and our favorite article Running with Your Greyhound from CGMagazine, Kurt and Megan wanted to give Kingsley a try in their home. The West family have renamed Kingsley to Spiral and he is doing very well with his endurance training. Kurt reports
that Spiral is running up to a mile with enthusiasm.

We wish the West family many happy years of Happy Tails with their new greyhound Spiral!

Emergency Foster Home Needed

**UPDATE** We have found a foster home for Rudy! Thank you Teri!!**

Occasionally a situation will arise where we need to take a dog in that we had not planned on taking. We are picking up a 2 1/2 year old Red Male from a farm in Eastern Oklahoma on Saturday and we do not have a permanent foster spot for him. His name is "MJ Spend A Buck" and we are calling him Rudy. Pedigree Info

One of our current foster homes has offered to keep him over the weekend until he is vetted on Monday, but after that we need someone who can foster him until he is adopted or a permanent foster spot opens up. We do not know if he is cat safe or not so we are hoping to find someone without cats or small dogs, to be safe. We will cat test him and if he is cat safe we do have someone who can foster him, but we won't know until Saturday.

The farm owner says he is very friendly and playful. He ran his last race 2 weeks ago and needs to be moved off the farm quickly. If you can help, please e-mail EmilyHummel@GreyhoundPetsOK.org  or call 405-837-7266.

Thank you!!

Spotlight on Tana!

Tana, or "Tana Your Hyde," is a bit timid but getting braver each day. She has a beautiful face with the sweetest eyes. If you like big girls, she's a keeper. She enjoys the comfort and safety of her crate but has recently begun sleeping on a dog bed on the floor. She wags her tail when her foster mom comes home and gives kisses until it’s time for a belly rub! She has learned a lot from her siblings and is catching on to the daily routine.

She appears to be housebroken and she does well outside. She needs more practice riding in the car, because the first time she got in she crawled to the front seat! Tana is looking for a family who will give her some time to get comfortable and settled in. She's at a wonderful stage right now where she's beginning to trust, loves to get petted, and can’t believe this is all hers. You will enjoy her enthusiasm as she sees and experiences new things.

A (Night) Chill in the Air

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a greyhound!...actually it’s a greyhound in a plane! Although a greyhound running can appear to be in flight this is the first time I’ve ever actually seen a greyhound fly. Greys Nightchill aka Veronica flew to the Chicago Area and it was a pretty exciting and heartwarming event.

Over a month ago I had an e-mail from a friend, Jenie Brooks, who used to live in Oklahoma City. A few years ago she relocated to near Chicago. Nine years ago Jenie had adopted Zora, my greyhounds’ Reba’s and Lulu’s littermate. We kept in touch the last few years giving updates about our greyhounds. Jenie contacted me because a member of her greyhound group, Matt Wheeler, in Illinois was interested in adopting Greys Nightchill, one of Hounds of the Heartland’s foster dogs, as he already had adopted two of her littermates, Greys Nightfever and Greys Nightghost. After discussing this amongst the board members we were excited and happy to be involved in reuniting these littermates.

We communicated back and forth for a couple of weeks trying to figure out the best plan to get Nightchill to IL. Driving seemed like the likely choice and we thought about meeting halfway. Then Mona Moore with REGAP of Illinois came up with the idea of contacting Pilots N Paws a group of pilots that ‘save the lives of innocent animals.’ (check them out at www.pilotsnpaws.org) Mona contacted pilot Sean Niklas who agreed to transport Nightchill to her forever home.

All of the arrangements were made and on Sunday October 17, 2010 Sean and copilot Grant Crocket flew to Oklahoma from Illinois and picked up Nightchill and flew her to her forever home. It was a beautiful sunny day and Nightchill seemed to be excited as we got to the airport and she watched the planes coming and going. Getting into the small plane was interesting. She was unsure about this part of the experience, but once in she seemed to be her happy self and settled in. The plane took off and Nightchill was on her way to her forever home.

Sean said that Nightchill seemed to actually enjoy the flight. It was almost as if she were a seasoned flyer. She enjoyed looking out the window at the scenery below and the clouds around her as well as lying down to watch Sean and Grant fly her to her destination.

After one stopover and 4 hours of flying Nightchill arrived in Illinois. Her new family anxiously awaited her arrival. It was a very happy homecoming and reunion as she greeted her new Dad Matt and his girlfriend Laura Scanlan and her brothers Nightfever and Nightghost.

Finally she arrived at her new home and promptly passed out on the couch (something she had never done in her life) next to her brother Nightfever. Thank you to everyone who enabled this family reunion to happen and helped Nightchill truly become a 45 mph couch potato!

How many martingale collars do you own?

We all know martingale collar shopping can get a littl addictive, so we decided to find out how many collars our readers had accumulated. Most of you own a reasonable 1-5 collars, but 35% own 6-10 collars, 5% own 11-15 OR 16-20 and 15% have a selection of over 20 collars for your hounds!

One of our volunteers, Jane Pace, has started her own custom Martingale Collar business called Fast Pace Designs. She makes unbelievable collars for a great price! She shows them off on her foster dog as well as her own 2 greyhounds Ebony & Downtown. If you would like to order a special collar for your hound or as a gift, contact JMP112@att.net.

Remember to vote on the next blog poll and tell us if you plan to dress up your hound for halloween!

Fall Medical Flash

Over the years I’ve noticed several things that affect greyhounds in the fall of the year of which I think everyone should be aware.

1. Energy it seems that our greyhounds have an excess of energy this time of year. It may have something to do with the cooler weather. They seem to just be energized and have bursts of power while running in the backyard. Keep an eye on your hounds this time of year. This burst of energy can cause some problems if they hurt a toe or run in to something. Go outside with them and monitor their behavior if possible.

2. Hunger – perhaps related to the burst of energy our hounds seem to be ‘starving’ this time of year. I know none of us want our greyhounds to get fat, but this time of year a little extra food and calories can be necessary. Increasing their food by ½ a cup could be all that they need. This will vary on a dog by dog basis. You know your dog. Keep an eye on them and do what you feel they need.

3. Bird Poop – for whatever reason there seems to be an excess of bird poop this time of year. Birds may be nice, but their poop can be very hazardous to our dog’s health. Some dogs actually eat the poop while others may just walk through it and then innocently lick it from their feet to clean themselves. Ingesting the bird poop can cause a bacterial infection exhibited by diarrhea. This type of diarrhea can only be cured with prescription medication. For the poop eaters (bird or otherwise) do your best to discourage this behavior and clean it up if necessary. It is a good practice to clean your dog’s feet when they come in from the backyard or if you’ve been on a walk. Keeping baby wipes by the door to quickly wipe their feet usually does the trick.

Keep your hounds happy and healthy and have a fabulous fall.

Prez Says... 1st edition!

Recently our Dog Blog celebrated it's one year anniversary, it is hard to image that it has been a year since Emily had the idea to start sharing stories, pictures, and events in a blog format. But what an amazing year! Big Huge Thank-You goes out to Emily for making the blog what it is today!

In reading Emily's post about the 1 year anniversary got me thinking that I should be more involved in the blog. So every once in a while I write a quick note and post it out here. For this installment I would like to further the discussion on Volunteering with HOH.

For my wife and I, as like most of us probably do, have a similar story of involvement that Emily and Angela shared. We adopted our first greyhound and knew right away that we wanted to continue to help out but were unsure what was needed or where we fit in. We went to a couple of Show&Tells and learned a lot about greyhounds but still didn't feel like we were really contributing. I remember having several discussions with my wife about what we could do to help out, but at the same time had a feeling that we might "step on someone's toes." We couldn't have been more wrong; after coming to a few more events and offering to help out, we were fully engulfed with great people that all shared the same vision to help the dogs!

So to all the people out there that might be reading this... if you would like to be more involved, just ask. I completely understand that it might be intimidating, or you might have feelings of apprehension. But it is my promise to each of you, to make everyone feel welcomed and needed. Our group is currently very small, so we have to decline several ideas and invitations just because we don't want to wear out our small volunteer base. Every person out there has unique skills and contacts, and we would love to be able to tap into a small part of everyone.

The ultimate form of volunteering is when we receive a call from someone saying "I have an idea, and I want to run with it.. We LOVE THAT! Someone coming up with idea and turning it into reality is an amazing site and makes me very proud to be involved in such an amazing group. A great example is Janet Riggan. She sent us an email several months ago saying "I have an idea for an all Greyhound Obedience Class, and I will put it all together if you guys think it is a good idea." We wrote back, "What an incredible idea! You run with it and let us know if you run into a road block that we can assist with." The class was a huge success, it brought together several greyhound owners to share their love for the dogs. Not only is this a great example of impromptu volunteering, but it is also a great example that volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes and it doesn't always have to be a "Show and Tell" event. Janet's example is just one of many; and this blog entry is dedicated to all our current, past, and possible future volunteers -- each of you are what make this organization great!

A Blogiversary Thank You

Hi friends and readers! You will hardly ever see me  post as “myself” but this week is a special week and deserves a special post :)

This Friday, October 8th is our first official “Blogiversary” – it will have been exactly one year since we started the HOH Dog Blog and what a year it has been!

How can one person be so lucky to have been involved with such an unbelievable group of people? We became involved with Hounds of the Heartland in April 2009. Showing up to a few show & tell events here and there, I thought we were doing it for Cami… she loved to see her “friends” and ESPECIALLY her foster dad Pete. When she caught a glimpse of Pete walking through the Petsmart sliding doors, it was like she was being reunited with the only man she ever knew. She still does this every single time she sees her foster "dad" and I'm so happy to know we have such a good connection between our foster parents and foster greyhounds.

As a newcomer to “the group” I wasn’t sure where I was invited and how often I should come to events before everyone thought I was a “greyhound groupie,” which I totally was. I slowly realized that there were no invitations or exclusions and being a “greyhound groupie” was totally acceptable! Everyone was so friendly and welcomed us with open arms. Standing at Show & Tell events next to Candee & Sharon was the most important source of knowledge I had found. Sure, the books were informative but they could never prepare me for the things I learned from those two women who had been doing this for years.

I tell you this because often I hear new adopters ask if they can continue to come to our events even if they aren’t adopting another—the answer is YES! We try our hardest to make outreach events fun for everyone in hopes that people will continue to keep our group alive with energy. If you adopted from us 7 years ago and want to get involved- come see us!

Never have I been more inspired by a group of people for such an unbelievable cause. Becoming a board member for Hounds of the Heartland has been the best thing to happen to me—ever. Volunteering for this group has taught me patience, understanding, compassion and has given me so many priceless friendships that will last forever. Never had I imagined so many hours, e-mails and phone calls would be involved in this work but every single moment is worth it when it's time to move a dog from "Our Hounds" to "Happy Tails."

We started the Dog Blog on October 8th, 2009 in hopes of inspiring others to get involved & join our efforts of finding a home for every hound. We have poured countless hours into creating a central hub for event announcements, pictures, videos, ANYTHING that might make a difference to one person; causing them to be aware of the need for foster and adoptive homes for these dogs. We will continue to grow and change to conform to what our readers want to see and we always welcome comments and suggestions as to what that might be.

To date we have received 7,375 hits to our little blog in one year. Our fancy statistics generator tells me that in addition to the USA we have had visitors from South Korea, Chile, Slovenia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Malta, Canada, Iran & Columbia. WOW! Can we keep it up? I hope so. You all are doing such a fantastic job spreading the word to your family and friends! Keep it up!

Please join us on our mission to make more people aware of the amazing greyhounds that need homes and THANK the people who have been doing this for years and years with no indication of letting up or backing down. To my best friends, Candee, Sharon, Brad & Trisha and ALL the special friends and connections we have made by doing what we love and loving what we do: Long Live Adoption! Here’s to many more successful years!

-Emily Hummel

Debbie Curtis Art - Fundraiser!

Debbie Curtis, a local artist whose barbie paintings you may have seen adorning walls all over the metro, recently began doing custom pet paintings quietly just for friends and family. After about a year or so, she has decided to make them available to the public to find out how much money she could raise for pet rescue organizations- and the response has been huge! Debbie has committed to put her talent to work as a permanent fundraiser for pet charities like Hounds of the Heartland!

Here's how it works: provide a good photo of your pet to Debbie and she will create an ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PORTRAIT on stretched canvas for you to hang and admire in your home. A 16"x20" painting is $150 and $50.00 of the proceeds will be donated to the pet rescue organizaton or pet charity of your choice! (We hope you choose us!) If you choose to have more than one pet painted on the canvas, the price may go up but no matter what she will always donate 1/3 of the proceeds to the rescue of your choice.

If you are interested in having your pet painted by the talented Debbie Curtis, please contact her at debbiecurtisart@yahoo.com and mention you heard about her from Hounds of the Heartland. We will also be placing a permanent sidebar advertisement that links to her website at http://www.debbiecurtisart.com.

Thank you for supporting local art & Hounds of the Heartland!
