Keep your dog safe this 4th of July

The 4th of July is great fun for humans, but it can be a scary time for your 4 legged friends. To some dogs, fireworks and the sounds they make can cause great fear and anxiety. It seems like people start setting of fireworks earlier and earlier each year. The following tips from http://www.dogtime.com/ will help keep your furry friend happy and healthy for the holiday weekend (and the weeks before!):
*Keep your dog inside, and if possible do not leave him alone in the house.
*If you will be gone, close your windows and turn on the radio/TV in order to drown out the noise of the fireworks
*Make sure he has access to his crate or safe place if he does become afraid.
*Give him treats occasionally to soothe him and reward for remaining calm.
*Do not change your routine or seem anxious, we all know our dogs take cues from our behavior and if we remain upbeat and positive they will feel comfortable.
*Walk your dogs early in the morning rather than late at night, as people are less likely to be experimenting with fireworks at that time.
Please do NOT take your greyhound to a fireworks show unless you are 100% certain they are familiar and comfortable with the sights and sounds. If they were to become frightened by the fireworks and make a sudden run for it, it is unlikely you will be able to catch them as the fireworks show will not stop while you look for your pet. Leave your greyhound at home with the windows shut and soothing music playing to drown out the sounds, your dog will thank you!

Attend "Give Back Day" @ Rococo- Tomorrow!!
Thirst Wine Merchants (http://thirstwine.com/) will also be offering a wine table @ Rococo with $20 wine tastings. Every cent of this goes to help greyhounds find homes after retirement. How could you say no??
Please encurage your family, friends & coworkers to stop by for lunch, dinner or HAPPY HOUR. This would be a great opportunity to get your coworkers together after a boring Monday and help greyhounds in need at the same time.
Rococo Restaurant & Fine Wine (http://rococo-restaurant.com/) is located at 2824 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in OKC. The menu is diverse along with carefully selected wines, spirits and beer. They are known for their larger-than-life crabcakes. In fact, on June 21st, the proceeds raised from the sale of one crabcake will feed a greyhound for 2 days. Hel-lo?!
Mark your calendar & we'll see you there!

Monthly Dog Park Gatherings!
Greyhound Get-Togethers will be regular monthly gatherings to allow our greyhounds and their owners to meet in an informal setting and to give the dogs a chance to see their buddies and stretch their legs. No need to RSVP, and no tables, supplies or adoption literature to keep track of. We’ll meet around 7:00, but it will be a come-and-go event. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for other dog park visitors to see the greyhounds in a natural environment, and to get acquainted with the breed.
Mark your Calendar:
June 13th
July 11th
August 8th
September 12th
October 10th
When: 2nd Sunday of every month at 7:00pm. The first gathering will be June 13th.
Where: Paw Park at Grand Blvd. and Hefner Parkway. http://www.pawok.com/
If the temperature is above 90 degrees we will postpone to 8:00pm.
Note: some irresponsible dog owners occasionally allow their small dogs to roam in the “big dog” area at the park. Please keep this in mind if your dog is known to be aggressive toward smaller dogs. We will do our best to educate these people about greyhounds and their natural instincts.
Also, there is a pond at this dog park so we will need to keep an eye on the greyhounds to make sure they don’t dive in the deep end. Bring a towel in case your greyhound does get wet. Throw a swimsuit in, too, in case you have to dive in after your greyhound! ;)

Greyhounds mentioned in Parade's "Ask Marilyn!"

Sunday's Column - May 23, 2010
Why do auto companies make cars that can exceed 160 mph when the limit on most U.S. highways is 75 mph or less? —Michael Boerman, Caledonia, Mich.
For the same reason they feature stunt-driving in their commercials: Many people think it’s cool to own a high-performance car, regardless of whether they can legally (or safely) test its limits. It’s like having a greyhound as a pet even though you don’t plan to race him. You love him anyway!
Anyway, extremely high-speed crashes do not account for the majority of speed-related accidents—few motorists are foolish enough to drive that fast—so you can forget about automakers cranking the speed down.
