Spotlight on Austin!

**Austin has been adopted!**

Austin is an extremely outgoing 6 year old greyhound who LOVES kids and LOVES to play with other dogs and toys. He would do very well with another playful dog his size. He is house trained and can be crated or left out. He is cat and small dog safe.

Obedience classes for Greyhounds only!

Are you interested in enrolling your Greyhound in obedience school?

We are working on setting up a 6 week course at Full Circle Obedience school for Greyhounds only. The class will most likely be on a Tuesday evening for 30 minutes to an hour and we will need 6 to 15 participants to make the class possible. The class fee would be $70 per dog (classes are regularly $110!) and they would learn basic obedience commands such as come, stay, leave it, etc.

If you would be interested in participating in such a class, please contact Janet Riggan (Tux’s mom) at jriggan2@cox.net. Once she has a list of interested participants, we can send out more concrete information about times, dates, etc.

For more information about Full Circle Obedience School visit http://fullcircleobedienceschool.com

Thank you for your participation!

Protect your pets when severe weather strikes

In order to protect your pets when severe weather is inevitable, preparation is key. The following tips from the Cooperative Extension System are crucial, especially in states like Oklahoma where severe weather can strike at any time.

Preparation before disaster

First, gather and keep pet supplies in a safe interior room of your home or basement. This includes fresh food and water in amounts to see you through the storm as well as a week or so afterward. "If your area is hit by a tornado, it may be a while before you can get to a store, or it may be the store has been damaged and not receiving shipments," says Dr. Jeremy Powell, associate professor and extension veterinarian with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. "Make sure you have enough to get your pet through until you can get them more."

Prepare the safe room prior to the storm by removing any dangerous or toxic items. These can include tools, wall-mounted shelves, cleaning supplies and other home maintenance products.

Another item to have in place before severe weather strikes is a litter box for cats or puppy pads for dogs. Excited or frightened pets are more apt to have accidents, and having these items on hand will help keep them focused. You also can keep crates in these areas so pets will have a secure hiding place. "This will help your peace of mind as well just by knowing your pets are safe and in one place," Powell says.

When tornado watch is issued

Place pets in their crates when a tornado watch is issued. When animals sense danger, they will look for a place to hide, and where they choose may not be easily located. This will eliminate them from running and you from looking for them.

Pets should always have adequate identification, which should be sturdy, readable and secure. If you and your pet get separated after the storm, this is the best and quickest way to have them returned to you. After the storm has passed, leash all pets if you go outside. Power lines could be down, and other dangerous items like debris will be everywhere.

Hounds of the Heartland asks that any greyhound adopted through our group always wear an official HOH ID tag- that only adds another means of contact should your greyhound get lost in a storm. If you have misplaced your HOH tag or need an updated one, contact us at GreyhoundPetsOK@GreyhoundPetsOK.org and we will provide one free of charge.

Always check your fences and gates before you let your greyhound out in the backyard after heavy winds or a severe storm. This could be the difference between life and death for your 4 legged friend!

Spotlight on Ava!

**Ava has been adopted!**

Ava is our newest member of the HOH "family" and she is such an energetic little social butterfly! She is cat and small dog safe. Here is what her foster dad says about her:
Ava likes to play and enjoys squeaking a good toy. She sleeps well through the night, and is house broken. She doesn't like her crate, but I think we can get her used to it. She (like most greyhounds) wants to be in the same room you are in, and will follow you around. She will lay down anywhere: on the tile, on wood or even in the grass. She does LOVE people, at the vet today she couldn't hold still at all because of all the people, she HAD to be petted by each and every person there. She does like to play with the other dogs, so I think she would do best in a house with another playful dog.
