Stamps to the Rescue - now on sale!

The goal: Halo & The United States Postal Service want more Americans to know about the millions of shelter pets that need good homes. Nearly half of the animals that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Many of these cats and dogs would have made a wonderful pet...if only given the chance.

You can make a difference! Adopt a pet, volunteer at a shelter, or just get the word out by buying these stamps.

More information about the campaign, cause & stamps can be found at http://stampstotherescue.com/

HOH is not affiliated with this or any rescue organization, but as an adoption program we support the efforts of Halo, the United States Postal service and other adoption organizations around the globe. Long live adoption!

Notice of event change

After much consideration, we will no longer be having a Show & Tell event at Petsmart on Rockwell & NW Expressway on the 4th Saturday of each month. THANK YOU to Petsmart for allowing us to host our event at this location! We have added an event at the Norman Petsmart on this weekend and will be looking for other beneficial locations as well.

Have you ever thought "I wish there was a monthly Show & Tell event closer to my home!" ? Well, there can be! We are always looking for volunteers to commit to hosting one event a month at a location near them. We only have so many volunteers to work each event, and we aren't always able to host events in certain areas of the OKC metro due to lack of resources.

If you would like to help spread the word about greyhound adoption, contact us today and we will help provide a table, display board & informational materials to hand out! We suggest contacting local hardware stores, pet supply stores and anywhere else you think would allow a happy greyhound to show off his attractive features.

Thank you for your continued interest & support in Hounds of the Heartland, YOU can make a difference!

The dog blog reaches 2000 hits!

Our dog blog has reached over 2000 hits and we are absolutely thrilled! This new site is continually growing and evolving with what we think you will be interested in knowing about. Do you have any suggestions about how to make the site a better, more effective use of information? Tell us what you think!

Our main website (http://www.greyhoundpetsok.org) is the main anchor of our organization as it is the formal site where we share information about adoptable greyhounds, adoption procedures, FAQs and much more! The blog is meant to be an informal supplement to our main website where we can have a little fun and share pictures and experiences from our various events around town.

Thank you for being such an important part of our group, and we continue to appreciate all your support throughout the years!

Warning: "Cocoa Mulch" is harmful to your pets!

This warning was passed along to us via e-mail and we have confirmed the warning on Snopes.com. Please take a moment to educate yourself and pass this on to any friends or family who may benefit from the information.

Over the weekend, the owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took her out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website: this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it." Snopes.com site gives the following information:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Submit a Testimonial!

We are designing a new segment for our website & blog in order to showcase Testimonials from adoptive & foster families!

We put a lot of effort into “convincing” people that they should adopt a greyhound- but we would love to share real stories and experiences from our foster families, adoptive families & volunteers!

If you would like to submit a comment, story, note or anything describing your positive experience with greyhound adoption or HOH, please E-Mail Us with the subject “Testimonial” – we would absolutely love to hear from you! Be sure to mention your name so we can give you credit for your kind words!

To view submitted Testimonials from other happy-hound-havers like you, check the bottom of the left hand column of our blog.

Thank you for being such an important part of our group!

Way to go, team!

What a BLAST we had at the Redbud Classic! It was a little (okay, a lot) hot but we had a great time chatting during our walk (about greyhounds of course) and we were even approached with questions and comments about greyhound adoption! Mission Accomplished!

If you want to see the race results visit http://www.redbud.org/ - you will find some of us listed under "Hands of the Heartland" - ha!
